Fish Oil Reduces Triglycerides

Fish OilStudies since the 1970's have all shown that incorporating omega-3 fatty acids in your diet reduces triglyceride levels. Don't take my word for it when you are dealing with your health. Here are a couple of recent medical studies that support this claim:

1. Skulas-Ray AC, et al. Omega-3 fatty acid concentrates in the treatment of moderate hypertriglyceridemia. Expert Opin Pharmacother 2008 May;9(7):1237-48

This study discusses a randomized placebo controlled experiment for the lowering of triglycerides with omega-3 fatty acids. It also compares over the shelf fish oil supplements with prescription preparations. It found that the triglyceride lowering is roughly dose dependent and ordinary fish oil products produced declines ranging from 39% for 4.5 g/d of EPA + DHA to around 26% for intakes of 2.2 to 2.5 g/day. It's conclusion was that there is no apparent significant difference between the health store fish oil product and the vastly more expensive prescription drug.

2. Kris-Etherton, PM, et al. Fish consumption, fish oil, omega-3 fatty acids, and cardiovascular disease. Circulation, Vol. 106, November 19, 2002, pp. 2747-57

This study states that people with high triglycerides should consume EPA and DHA (the component in fish oil) to lower their levels. They should do this through pure supplements due to the high concentration of methylmercury, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and dioxins in many fish species.

3. Laidlaw, Maggie and Holub, Bruce J. Effect of supplementation with fish oil-derived n-3 fatty acids and gamma-linolenic acid on circulating plasma lipids and fatty acid profiles in women. American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, Vol. 77, January 2003, pp. 37-42

This study states that diet supplementation with fish oil is very effective at lowering triglyceride levels. Their test subjects experienced a 40% lowering of triglyceride levels after 28 days.

The main issue with increasing omega-3 fatty acids in your diet is the high level of contamination such as mercury in many cold water fish. Cheaply pressed fish oil will then contain these same contaminates. Prior to starting my supplementation regime, I researched all the top brands of fish oil. My research determined that the Nordic Naturals Ultimate Omega brand was at the forefront in providing healthy fish oil supplments.

Amazon carries this brand as cheap as anywhere else that I have found. If you click on the link below and purchase your supplements, I receive a small commission to help support this website at no additional cost to you. If you don't, no problem. Whatever your decision, there is just too much research confirming the benefits of adding fish oil to your diet. Some studies show that you can reduce the risk of heart attack over the next 10 years by 43%. That is cheap insurance.
